Mobile-First Design

Let's start with the different kinds of devices. Although they have very similar functionality, if we are looking for the main differences, we can find a lot. For instance, people use different devices for different purposes in different circumstances. Filling out long and important documents require an easy overview, therefore a bigger screen. But for listening to music during commuting to work we won't take our laptops with us.

And there comes mobile-first design: designers create the mobile version of the websites first, before taking care of the ones for tablet and desktop. It is easier to deal with placing the content element on greater space than trying to showcase tons of things that have been designed for desktop versions.

I believe that I haven't really understood the point of going big from small back then when I had to work on my mobile-first task at CareerFoundry. However, what I got really well was the point of making the route tracker available only on mobile, as people won't take their tablets and computers with them on a paddling tour.
